We Can Choose Health
For Humans, Fish, Plants ...
Crystal Lake and Watershed Association has once again contracted for the application of poisons in Crystal Lake without any public feedback/consensus, democratic process, safety studies or even evidence that their strategy is more effective than poison free alternatives. They are relying on the marketing materials of the herbicide contractor and manufacturer to determine whether these products are safe. We know that many products deemed safe by corporations and federal regulators have turned out to be very dangerous years later. What can we do together to help CLWA understand that putting poisons in our shared waters is not the answer?

DECISIVE ACTION FEELS GREAT
Posted June 15, 2021 in the Benzie Record Patriot. This seems to be the full extent of CLWA's public outreach efforts. Note that the contractor's number is listed for more info, no contacts for CLWA. The contractor presumably is not motivated to record the number of calls or the concerns of the callers, the time spent answering those calls and offering reassurance would just be the cost of doing business. This is somewhat disingenuous on the part of CLWA, they don't seem to be interested in getting clear feedback from the public about their plans to use herbicide. My cousin's cottage is within the application area. Her 16 year old son is an avid fisherman and did his own research on the hazards of chemicals to fish and people. He called the contractor but did not feel his concerns were taken seriously or addressed.

REVIEW THE EVIDENCE
Community
Thousands of people in five different municipalities own property on and around Crystal Lake. Water flows into Crystal Lake from the watershed, an area of land twice as big as the lake itself. Lots more people own land in the watershed.
With so many different property owners, how can general agreement about the future of Crystal Lake be achieved? What about State and Federal agencies? Do the opinions of visitors matter?
Americans are supposedly very individualistic, not focused on sharing. Yet here in Benzie County, there is clearly common ground - we all love Crystal Lake. Could we be a Crystal Lake Community?
For everyone who lives here, near, or travels from afar to swim, dive, fish, or boat on the best lake ever.
